USPS Injury Treatment
OWCP Care for Postal Workers in the Bay Area
Postal work is one of the most physically demanding jobs in the country, and most people who haven’t done it don’t fully appreciate what that means. Letter carriers walk eight to ten miles a day, often on cracked sidewalks, uneven terrain, and steep driveways, carrying loaded bags in every kind of weather. Mail processing clerks spend hours standing at sorting stations, repeating the same movements thousands of times per shift. Dock workers and package handlers lift, twist, and maneuver heavy loads under constant time pressure. Drivers navigate long routes with repetitive entry and exit from vehicles, their bodies absorbing the cumulative toll of years behind the wheel.
The injuries that come from this kind of work are real, they are serious, and you are entitled to care for them.
At Bay Area Rehab and Medical, we treat postal workers every day. We understand the physical demands of your job, we understand the OWCP compensation system you have access to, and we know how to navigate that system on your behalf so that you can focus on one thing: getting better.
Common Injuries Postal Workers Face
Knee and back injuries are the most frequently seen conditions among postal workers, and for good reason. Both parts of the body absorb enormous stress over the course of a career in postal work, and both tend to worsen gradually before they become impossible to ignore.
Back Injuries
The lower back is particularly vulnerable in postal work. Carriers load and unload their vehicles dozens of times a day. Clerks hold fixed postures for extended periods. Dock workers lift packages that are heavy, awkwardly shaped, and often arrive in rapid succession. Over time, this kind of repetitive strain leads to conditions including herniated discs, lumbar sprains, degenerative disc issues, and chronic pain that can radiate into the hips and legs.
Catching and treating a back injury early makes a significant difference in both recovery time and long-term outcomes. Our providers are experienced in evaluating the full picture of a postal worker’s back condition, from diagnostic assessment through hands-on rehabilitative treatment and pain management.
Knee Injuries
Letter carriers are particularly susceptible to knee injuries, given the sheer volume of steps they take each day on surfaces that are rarely flat or forgiving. Meniscus tears, ligament strains, patellar tendinitis, and general joint deterioration are common findings. But knee problems show up across all postal roles, in dock workers who are constantly crouching and rising, in drivers whose knees are locked in position for hours, and in clerks who stand on hard floors through long shifts.
Our team evaluates knee injuries thoroughly, coordinates imaging and orthopedic consultation when needed, and develops treatment plans that address both the immediate pain and the underlying functional issue.
Shoulder and Rotator Cuff Injuries
Carrying a loaded mail bag on one shoulder, day after day, creates asymmetrical strain that the shoulder joint was not designed to sustain indefinitely. Rotator cuff tears and strains, shoulder impingement, and chronic inflammation are frequent findings in long-tenured carriers. Package handlers and dock workers face similar risks from repetitive overhead lifting and forceful throwing or sliding of parcels.
Wrist, Hand, and Repetitive Motion Injuries
Mail processing clerks and sorters are among the most at-risk workers for repetitive motion injuries. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and cumulative trauma disorders develop gradually in workers whose hands and wrists are in nearly constant motion throughout a shift. These injuries are easy to dismiss early on, but they can become seriously debilitating if left untreated.
Slip, Trip, and Fall Injuries
Rain, ice, uneven pavement, unfamiliar properties, and the constant pressure to maintain delivery schedules make slip and fall injuries a regular occurrence for carriers. These incidents can result in fractures, soft tissue injuries, head trauma, and complex multi-area injuries that require coordinated care across several disciplines.

What You’re Entitled to Under OWCP
As a USPS employee, your workplace injuries are covered under the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act, administered by the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs. This is an important distinction from state workers’ compensation. FECA is a federal program with its own rules, its own forms, its own billing procedures, and its own documentation standards.
Under OWCP, you are entitled to full coverage of medical treatment related to your accepted injury. There are no copays, no deductibles, and no out-of-pocket costs for covered care. You are also entitled to wage-loss compensation if your injury prevents you from working, and to vocational rehabilitation if your injury affects your ability to return to your previous role.
The process of accessing these benefits can feel complicated, especially when you are already dealing with pain and trying to maintain your regular life. That is exactly where we come in.
How We Work With Postal Workers
From the moment you contact us, we take the complexity off your plate.
We are an authorized OWCP provider. We know the documentation required, we know how to submit it correctly, and we know what a well-supported claim looks like. Our team handles the coordination with OWCP directly, which means you are not left trying to figure out forms, authorizations, or billing on your own.
Every patient at Bay Area Rehab and Medical is treated as if they are our only patient. That is not a phrase we use lightly. It means your calls get returned. It means your questions get answered in plain language. It means your treatment plan is built around your specific injury, your specific job, and your specific recovery goals, not a generic protocol.
Our multidisciplinary model is particularly well suited to the kinds of injuries postal workers experience. Rather than sending you to multiple separate providers across multiple locations, our team works together under one roof. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, musculoskeletal and manual therapy, pain management, orthopedic evaluation, durable medical equipment, and case management are all available through a single coordinated practice. That means your providers are talking to each other, your documentation stays consistent, and your care stays on track.
Our goal is straightforward: get you the care you are entitled to, support your claim properly, and help you return to work and to your life as fully and as quickly as possible.
