If you were injured on the job as a federal employee, you have to deal with the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs (OWCP) at some point, and the system is not built to be easy. There are different phone numbers for different questions. Forms have specific names, and each one has specific rules about where it gets sent. It is easy to send the wrong thing to the wrong place and lose weeks waiting on a response that never comes.

This page pulls the current, verified OWCP contact information, district office details, and claim forms into one place. Everything here links to official Department of Labor sources. How to Contact OWCP

OWCP’s Division of Federal Employees’ Compensation (DFEC) handles FECA claims. There are different numbers depending on what you need, so the right one to call depends on your question.

 

General and Case-Related Questions

For questions about your case, call (202) 513-6860, Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Have your nine-digit case number ready before you call. The system is automated, and you may be asked to leave a voicemail. When that happens, OWCP says calls are returned within 48 hours, so leave your case number, the reason for your call, and a callback number.

Automated Case Status, Any Time

For case status and compensation payment information around the clock, call OWCP’s automated line at (866) 692-7487 (866-OWCP-IVR). Have your nine-digit case number and Social Security number ready before you call. 

 

Questions About Medical Bills and Treatment Authorizations

For the status of a medical bill, a pharmacy request, or a treatment authorization, call the medical bill processor at 844-493-1966, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time, toll free. Both injured workers and providers use this number. 

 

File and Manage Your Case Online (ECOMP) 

Most claimants file and track their claims through ECOMP, the Employees’ Compensation Operations and Management Portal, at ecomp.dol.gov . Through ECOMP you can file a claim, upload documents to your case for same-day receipt, respond to OWCP letters, and check the status of your bills, medications, and compensation. Registering for an ECOMP account is the single most useful thing most injured workers can do early in the process.

Always write your nine-digit claim number on every page you send. Documents without a case number are one of the most common reasons paperwork gets lost. 

 

Your OWCP District Office (Bay Area)

Even though mail is centralized, your claim is still assigned to a district office based on where you work. Federal employees in the Bay Area fall under the San Francisco District Office, which covers Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Nevada.

Key OWCP Forms

FECA runs on forms, and each one has a specific job. Sending the wrong form, or the right form to the wrong address, is a common way claims get delayed. Here are the forms most injured federal workers deal with. Each links to the official Department of Labor PDF.  

Form CA-1 — Notice of Traumatic Injury – File this when your injury happened in a single event during one work shift: a fall, a lifting injury, a collision. It also lets you claim Continuation of Pay. This is usually the first form for a sudden injury.  

Form CA-2 — Notice of Occupational Disease – File this when your condition developed over time from repeated job demands rather than one incident: carpal tunnel, chronic back conditions, hearing loss. Occupational claims require you to show how your job duties caused the condition, so the documentation matters more here.  

Form CA-7 — Claim for Compensation – File this to claim wage-loss compensation when your injury keeps you off work. The CA-1 or CA-2 opens your case; the CA-7 is how you actually claim payment for lost time. 

Form CA-17 — Duty Status Report – These documents your work restrictions and what duties you can and cannot perform. Your doctor completes it. It is central to any return-to-work discussion, and it is one of the forms we prepare with you. 

Form OWCP-957A  — Medical Travel Refund Request (Mileage) and Form OWCP-957B Use these to get reimbursed for traveling to and from covered medical appointments. Use the 957A for mileage only; use the 957B for other travel costs like parking or tolls. Note: these forms must be mailed to the London, KY bill address (P.O. Box 8300). Uploading them to ECOMP will not get them processed.

How to Confirm a Provider Is OWCP-Authorized

OWCP pays for care from enrolled, authorized providers. If you see a provider who is not enrolled with OWCP, your treatment can go unpaid, and you can end up in a billing dispute you should never have been in.

Before you start care, confirm the clinic bills OWCP directly and is enrolled with the OWCP medical bill processor. You can verify the status of bills and authorizations through the OWCP Medical Bill Processing Portal, or call the medical bill processor at 844-493-1966 with questions. Providers enroll through the OWCP-1168 provider enrollment process, and any clinic that regularly treats federal workers should be able to tell you plainly whether they are enrolled and authorized.
